Breath of Life, Conscious Connected Breathing, Circular Breathing and Rebirthing are all variations of an ancient breath techniqueThe factor that makes one different from another is more environmental than technical. In other words, the set (where you are) or setting {1} (who you are with) in which the work is done is actually more impactful than the technical variations, and we will mention why later. When you arrived on this planet, independent from your mother, you took your first breath almost immediately. It was vital that you learn to breathe before all else. The Buddhists call the moment of birth, “The Great Forgetting {2}.” Rebirthing is a breath process one could easily call, “Discarding Forgetfulness.”

On the day and in the moment of leaving your body and this planet, you will take one last breath and surrender {3} everything you possess at that time. Your entire life is encompassed by breathing one breath after another. Breath is imperative to life. Breath IS life. The manner of your breathing is commensurate with the manner of your living. Conscious and enthusiastic breathing results in an awakened life filled with joyful enthusiasm, increased life energy and higher levels of consciousness. GOD is in your breath {4}. The root of the word, “spirit,” is found in the word, “respiration.”

Most of us do not recognize the power of conscious breathing. We likewise take for granted that altering our consciousness requires a stimulant, such as a drug, or that altered consciousness is reserved for adepts or mystics. Actually, our consciousness is altered in small ways on a regular basis and it just doesn't register on a conscious level. It is these little incremental increases, or shifts, in consciousness that make for most of our spiritual progress. Steady effort over long periods of time creates momentum which results in major shifts at certain junctures in our lives. Whether you are a novice or a veteran on the spiritual path, by using your breath consciously you may increase your momentum and accelerate {5} your process.

To demonstrate this to yourself, here is a simple experiment. (Read through the instructions before starting.) Take twenty quick, deep, full-bodied breaths in close succession, releasing all effort during exhale. Follow each completed exhale with an immediately quickened inhale, each shaped just like the first if possible. Be mindful and don't hold or push the breath from your lungs when you exhale, simply allow it to fall from you as if to surrender completely for its duration — then sincerely pay attention to the body/mind. Subtle but significant changes occurred during the twenty breaths. You may notice a slight tingling or buzzing sensation somewhere, most likely around your eyes and in your extremities if nowhere else. Second, you may have become more quiet. You may have shifted toward peace of mind or become more aware of a noisy mind. A shortness of breath would indicate a holding of the breath while embracing something new. In this case, the idea of breathing consciously. If you notice nothing, consider that in order to even take twenty breaths consciously, you put everything out of the front of your mind with the possible exception of a judgment or feeling of resistance brought to the surface by the experiment. That in itself is a change of consciousness. Realistically, it is impossible to breathe consciously without shifting or changing the consciousness.

These may seem like insignificant changes. They are subtle. When you add them together in a thirty-six minute effort to connect every single breath, passionately taken and deliberately surrendered for the purpose of getting closer to the Truth of what or who you are, you will change your consciousness permanently. No, you won't pass out, get dizzy, or fall over. This technique, a passionate inhale followed by a completely surrendered exhale connecting each breath with another (forming a circle) for thirty-six minutes, will raise your consciousness forever.

Consciousness changes in an obvious way very soon after one begins the process. In the presence of another, who represents an authority figure, i.e., mother, father, pediatrician, etc., these changes are amplified {6}. For those who have just embarked on the path of consciousness expansion, heightened awareness should be accompanied by a guide, in this case an experienced rebirther. Someone who understands the process and has dealt with the new and sometimes unexpected change of perspective. The view may not be what you would expect. Besides that, there are pitfalls to consider. Not life threatening though they can seem so in the moment. One result is the awareness of what lies just outside of our consciousness which is much more apparent when we breathe in a way which encourages consciousness. It is important to remember that if there were no obstacles to higher consciousness we would all be there now. The path upward and inward can be greatly facilitated by someone who has made the journey.

Going the whole distance is impossible for most and without the presence of the rebirther we are missing the real and potent “witness {7}” factor. Most of us, including myself, are immediately confronted by unconscious fear of what may lay just beneath the surface of consciousness. If you've ever gone swimming in deep or dark waters of a lake or the ocean, and wondered if something might come up from beneath and gobble you up, then you know what I mean. Both come from the fear of the “shadow {8}” side of life.

That which we fear is a suppressed “thought” or “image” we have about ourselves. Wrapped in distrust of our higher self, it is a lie we try to hide because it just might be true. “What if I find I'm a bad or unacceptable human being?” Or something of the sort. I, and others like me, are here to tell you that this fear is based on the belief in a lie you have been taught by a force larger than our little selves but smaller than our Higher Self. And that lie is as self-negating as if we had stabbed ourselves in the heart. This breath work reduces and eventually eliminates self-negating unconscious thought patterns. Lies!

The technique is very old, but the term “rebirthing” was coined in the early 70’s by Leonard Orr. He was experimenting with breathing techniques attempting to cool his body while doing research on the effects of staying in the sauna longer than usual. When trying this circular breathing pattern, the most notable aspect was his memory and eventual “healing” of birth trauma. Remember, you take the first breath within seconds of your birth.

All of us go through an impressive, dramatic change in both body and mind awareness at birth. Doctors, mostly psychologists, have noted that through hypnosis some of their clients remember the birth experience. The birth experience is powerful and painful and certainly dramatic for almost everyone. During this experience we form thought patterns that have lasting impact on our lives. For the majority, it is the most powerful experience they ever have. And this experience imprints us with every aspect of itself just as if we were minted by it like a coin. And just like a coin there are two sides to the experience. The positive and “lighter” side and the negative or “darker” side. Please note that negative, meaning receptive and ne-gative meaning antagonistic or limiting, sound similar but are very different in meaning. Here we will use the term ne-gative, meaning to block out or limit to the point of exclusion. The “dark” and the “light” are very close to one another and the difference is impossible for us to discern at birth. Neither are better for to produce one the other must likewise be created. We can have no light without its opposite dark. Our entire worldly reality is composed of this concept of opposing forces, dark and light, left and right, up and down, pleasant and unpleasant, yin and yang and on and on into infinity. In other words, a duality. There is a conflict of dual forces that comes into play which ultimately will need to be resolved before the duality becomes one. The battle between Truth and not Truth. This battle is taking place at all times and we are born into it just as we are born into the rest of the world. This battle takes place within us and without us. The very instant GOD created heaven and earth, the battle began. And though you or another may see this in a different way, the fact remains, there is a struggle for the upper hand between the forces of light and the forces of dark. As long as we accept the paradigm of duality as real, the battle rages on. We are born making every mistake in the book (born into sin as the Bible puts it) and those mistakes must be corrected along the way to heal the rift. To do this efficiently, it is best to start with the biggest mistake we will ever make—believing the first lie: To be one with God we must die. And from that lie all other lies are born. The Truth we are seeking to become aware of here is that we are already One. That is the primary intent of our breath work.

The next biggest lie is more personal and will go something like, “I am not good enough as a woman or man.” Or, “ I am dangerous.” Or, as in my case, “I am wrong.” There are five of these second level lies. The other two are, “I am too much,” and, “I am bad or guilty.” We each choose one of these lies based on our experiences at the moment of birth and the karmic patterns we came into the world to resolve. Some are obvious like, “I am too much,” could come from the awareness that our bodies are very big coming out of our Mother's womb, and it hurts her. We can hear her screaming in pain and possibly saying things like, “this baby is killing me.” Because the convoluted, timeless way our psyche works to help heal us through our belief system, we spend the rest of our lives proving that these lies are true. In other words, we manifest events which justify our beliefs. Countless times the opportunity to make myself wrong in some huge way has occurred in my life. If you think for one minute that your loved ones, friends and family alike, will help you dismember your false belief system just watch what happens when you really see it and point it out to them. Take a long look at Jesus the Christ and think about what he was telling the world around him. Things haven't changed much for the majority.

Because there is a lot of pain for mom and us at birth, these thought patterns are associated with fear and uncertainty. The fear of pain produces instant responses to anticipated events after we arrive here. Just one example of this is the difficulty experienced by an infant while passing through the birth canal being translated throughout life as - “Life is a struggle,” “I must struggle to stay alive,” or even as a feeling of - “Let me out of here,” which surfaces when we are faced with new or stressful situations. After all, twelve or more hours going just one inch in distance through an opening that is a third the size of our head can't help but produce trauma. There are other powerful aspects of our birth that riddle our unconscious with painful and lasting imprints. We address them in private should you care to take the time.

The next big consideration is the pain of being independent. The first breath taken immediately following our birth is a blast of cold dry air pouring into previously untouched lungs, after being slapped on the fanny or leg by a doctor or nurse whose thought projections are rarely about the beauty of GOD and the gift of life. Thoughts like, “What an ugly baby,” or, “why do they always come at 2 AM,” or much worse, permeate our psyche. Our parents, the people who inhabit our environment, along with the world at large, harbor unconscious thought patterns constantly. We are subjected to these from beginning to end. Our freshly exposed sensitive little bodies are then placed in a dry, crisp cloth laid on a stainless steel scale, or vise-versa and maybe placed in our mother's hands and maybe not. Sometimes taken immediately away and placed in isolation where we are prodded and poked to determine if we will live or not, are broken or deformed.

It should be quite easy to see that we associate taking a breath with pain, especially when faced with new or uncertain situations. The belief that life is a painful struggle becomes an integral part of our mental makeup. It is a primal response. We continue to prove this throughout life by manifesting events that make this lie real. After all, it is a belief!

On top of these lies we have about ourselves and life, we place our later learned beliefs, both conscious and unconscious, as we accumulate them throughout life, layer upon layer very much like a pyramid. With Truth above the tip (the tip being the first lie denying us our birthplace in the Godhead) of an inverted pyramid, we live on the surface of the bottom layer filled with uncertainty and fear, while the whole time being asked, nay, demanded by the world around us to deny that every lie between us and the Truth even exists.

When we breathe consciously and with deliberate attention to the purpose of life, we contradict this lie directly. We act, by the very effort to take in life-giving breath consciously, in affirmation of life. When this is done in an environment which is set with that intention, the unconscious aspects of our mind that are in agreement with this notion come into play. Like attracts like and unlike repels. The unconscious, like a child, sees the effort as a call to action and begins to move or lose all that is life ne-gating. For the very act of breathing is life creating. How? The how is in the substance of the air. At the heart of all things is Qi, Prana, Manna from Heaven... atoms. And atoms are the stuff of stars, the stuff from which we are made. GOD stuff .

What we do when we breathe deliberately and consciously, with enthusiasm through a state of surrender, is to tell the unconscious that we are choosing life. That we are choosing to release all that is life ne-gating and that we are grateful to be here now. It is the holiest of communions for together we are taking in the very substance from which all of the universe is made. When you breathe with me, we breathe together.

So, to summarize... “What is Breath of Life ?” Breath of Life is an energizing breath process guided by a coach (a “Rebirther”) that fills us with energy, cleans and heals us of unwanted physical and thought patterns and suppressed emotions that inhibit the joy we so richly deserve.

Comments:

{1} Set and setting. The set is where we find the current drama of our lives being acted out. For instance, we may find ourselves in our kitchen or our bedroom or our workplace when we are awakened, however briefly, by an event. The setting refers to the persons in whose presence we find ourselves at that moment. These qualities are significant in the event simply because we have chosen them, on some level of consciousness, to bring us into awareness of a potential re-membering of our fragmented selves.
In doing conscious breath work, we have chosen the set and setting consciously. The set and setting can be a catalyst to either muted or profound change by choosing an easy as opposed to an efficient teacher. In other words, choosing a more masterful guide may make all the difference in the world.

{2} The Great Forgetting. What happens at birth is so deeply moving that it is impossible to remember the simple experience of being “in the light.” The trauma is earth shattering. We are the earth in this case and we are shattered. We become fragmented and must be re-membered. To do this we have to create a starting point from which to work. That point is the little self. The next step is to create the tool of remembering and oddly enough, the tool is the antithesis of the goal. It is the ego, or who we think we are. If we are fortunate, or have made a choice while at our Soul level of consciousness prior to birth, we find ourselves surrounded with a life of choices that prepare the ego for its surrender to Love. If we take advantage of these choices, the ego is eventually put aside and we “know GOD.” You can say that just before this occurs, we will have re-membered all of our parts to become one whole.

{3} Surrender. In the Bible there is a passage, written by St. Paul, in which he describes the principals of the Holy Trinity in terms of one's spiritual practice. He refers to “Faith, Hope, and Charity, the greatest of these is Charity.” In the Bhagavad Gita there is a similar reference to “Love, Devotion, Surrender.” The great Russian mystic and holy man earlier in this past century, George Guerjief, defined this trinity for us all in phrases we can relate to easily. Many of us take the terms without considering the meanings and their application. Here is what he had to say, paraphrased. Faith is knowledge of things hoped for. Hope (not wishing) is the effort to make them so. Charity is allowing them to be so. With a little effort we can see the logic in these metaphysical standards. Faith is the equivalent of an act of Love here. It is the knowing through experience that what we hope will be given us by GOD. There is no question of the fact of our receiving what we have hoped for. From this place of absolute knowing we are “in Faith.” There can be NO equivocation here. Hope is effort. We made the effort, against all resistance. From our heart, with all of our Soul, and all of our mind, and all of our body. Hope is work! Work is defined as force against resistance. Resistance in this instance is the ego. The identity that we have taken to believe is our self; a construct composed of false beliefs and preconceived ideas assembled by external and internal influences most of which are contrary to Spiritual purity, the heart of which is the first lie. It is a great effort (work) to bring this under the sway of spiritually motivated choices. Just wishing it were so will not make the grade. Allowing that which is hoped for to be made manifest requires us to surrender our effort to make it so. There can be no receiving while effort is being made. “Come into my sabbath (rest) saith the Lord.” Celebrating the Sabbath is the act of allowing the Love of GOD. In the Breath of Life, it is allowing your breath to fall from your body; in that moment you have ceased the effort to take in life.

{4} GOD is in your breath. See also {9}. You, the objects around you, the sun and all the stars, and the air you breathe, are all made of atoms. Atoms are miniature universes. Their vibrational rates determine the qualities we perceive as differences between, say, that of wood as opposed to stone. Likewise the difference between you or I, as seemingly separate bodies and minds, although quite complex, is created by atoms vibrating at different rates. Each atom has its own signature or intonation and a composition of atoms is a statement or symphony. The music of the spheres, as spoken of by mystics over the millennia, is the sound of our environment at the atomic level. It is accessible by anyone who should seek it sincerely and with determination. At the center of this minute cosmic entity is the gateway to Heaven, beyond which is the face of GOD. When you breathe, you breathe in the body of Christ, the phenomena of the sound of GOD’s Love made manifest as a singing cosmic instrument. Everything that exists is singing the praise of GOD. The finest of these which is consumable is the essence of the air we breathe.

{5} Momentum and acceleration. Momentum is the forward progress that is continued when effort is ceased. In the breath it can be seen as the sustaining quality of breath when we allow our breath to cease for a moment. The process of rebirthing has several outcomes. One of these is to bring the light of consciousness to unconscious thought patterns which we must know to discover who we are. Our ignorance of who and what we are is the obstacle to manifesting our whole Being. There is always a movement, though in many it is meandering or pointlessly chaotic, in this direction. This movement is the evolution of the Soul. We all evolve. It is, in my opinion, impossible to actually stop progress, but one may proceed in the absolute worst possible direction. However, all souls eventually wind up in GOD. The point here is that with conscious breath work we may gather greater momentum and accelerate the process of unfolding the unconscious layers of Being. The opportunities for evolving are around us everyday. We miss most of them because we have obstacles to our perception in the form of fear thoughts and reactionary beliefs just beneath the surface. These trigger judgment which leads to desire, or aversion which blocks the perception of Love's provisional opportunity. By choosing the breath consciously we make a clear and unequivocal statement to the unconscious that we would rather unfold (live) than withdraw (die.) We choose life! The unconscious is quite cooperative and will give us exactly what we put into it. So it begins to remove all that is obstructing our view of life. Over time, as we pursue conscious breath, a momentum toward living is gathered. Greater and greater opportunities will present themselves in exactly the form we need for progress.

Acceleration of the life process is achieved by the moderation of the breathing pattern. The form must always remain within certain patterns, i.e., circular, enthusiastic, and surrendered without hesitation at the top and the bottom. However, the speed and volume may be widely moderated. The deeper we breathe into our abdomen, the more “gut level” fear we will stir up. The faster we breathe the more current time momentum we gather. Please note, rarely do novice practitioners achieve a level of breath efficiency that allows for much moderation. The tendency is to resist this change, and so I focus on efficiencies at the beginning and then encourage experimentation with volume and speed much later. What the novice is doing at this point is very much like a pant such as seen in small animals.

{6} In the presence of another... changes are amplified. Jesus said, “Where two or more are gathered together in my name, there shall I be also.” I am convinced this is the direct voice of GOD telling us when the intention of a gathering of two or more is Love, there Love shall be. Love gently awakens us to the Truth. Love exposes anything and everything that opposes it. Love is gentle and kind and when we evoke Love for the purpose of knowing the Truth, the lie opposed to this knowledge will be immediately apparent. Whatever is on our minds, manifesting in our bodies, when we gather in the name of Love to breathe, is the obstacle to awareness of Truth. Awareness is a catalyst to change. Two or more aware personages is more powerful than the sum of the personages. Growth is exponentially amplified. Change happens faster in group consciousness. And we unconsciously know this. Often clients are afraid in the presence of this increased power, therefore, safety is usually the first issue to be addressed.

{7} Witness. An objective witness to any event will have no judgment. The witnesses intention will be to observe and allow. In this environment, the practitioner may have the space and time to experience anything which may be ready to present itself to the Light of Love. For this reason, the witness should be as clear as possible. As an interesting note, the clients we find coming to us are frequently dealing with issues we also have chosen to deal with at that time. The difference is the depth and the willingness to surrender up to Love, the issues discovered in the process. For many years I found myself with clients who had childhood trauma issues that reflected my own.

{8} Shadow. If we are looking into the sun we cannot see our shadow. Likewise, if we are looking at a stained glass window we cannot see the shadow cast by our body's obstruction of the light passing by. If we are in the dark, all is in the shadow. Even though a person may have made great strides in becoming aware of the shadow side of his/her life, the shadow side is still there. It is unseen. It is the repressed aspect of our selves, both the positive and the ne-gative. The shadow is most easily viewed through your dreams. It is possible though, to see the impact of the shadow in waking state. It is often that which you both love and hate about others or situations. The qualities you wish you embodied and somehow feel you have the potential for, but cannot find the wherewithal to bring forth. Those qualities in others which you abhor, and simply cannot believe you have them within yourself. These qualities are there. For thou art GOD and GOD is ALL. Seeing this may take some effort and certainly a relaxed and nonjudgmental approach. It may aid your effort to know that the Shadow is beneficial, but we must respect its nature. It is more powerful than our conscious side, and will manifest that which we must confront or live in slow death for the lack of creative evolution.

{9} GOD. Throughout this text I have referred to GOD. My experience as a spiritual being has left me with the conclusion that ALL is GOD. That there is nothing but GOD. All things, all thoughts, all qualities... everything you can name or identify in any way, shape, or form, is in and permeated by its source which is GOD and that GOD is a pure, unadulterated ocean of Love that knows no boundary. If you have problematic responses to the term GOD, substitute the term "essence." It is that which exists at the most fundamental level of existence to which I refer. In some schools it is called First Principal or First Cause. Supreme Being may function for you as well.

What experiences may we conceivably have during a rebirthing session?

Fear of hearing about the subject: You would be amazed at how many people simply refuse to consider that consciously breathing can be of use in their quest for happiness. They don't really want happiness or to live fully from the heart. What they want is to live in the denial of the Higher Self and continue to seek happiness in the world of objects and sensory gratification alone. When presented with the opportunity to truly evolve deliberately they run away.

Anxiety on the way to the session: Just the effort to proceed with this process will bring up the top layer of obstruction. Like was mentioned before, anything new brings up birth trauma.

Initial conversation: This is where you as a practitioner of the process get to tell your story and expose what you have come to the process for. It is a period of time we spend discussing issues and getting to know one another better, and with me you take all the time you want. I have a fifty-five count questionnaire which most clients fill out and return to me. This brings many issues to the fore without conversation, and offers an opportunity to describe the environment into which the client was born.

Discussion of terms and technique: We go over many of the items covered in this writing and some items that are not. This serves to further comfort and increase a feeling of safety for the client/practitioner.

Beginning to breathe: We begin by observing the typical breath pattern of the client/practitioner and move from that into the previously agreed to pattern in a gentle and closely guided way.

Lightheadedness: This is an early stage of the process. In the first few seconds of the breath work we have a clearing of the “fog” of our conscious minds peripheral realm and experience what is a little lighter mind-state. It quickly becomes integrated into the moment and the sensation passes as we proceed. No stopping is recommended for that simply halts the forward progress.

Objectively observed healing patterns -- Laughing, crying, shaking, shivering and yawning: These are some of the more obvious experiences one may have. This is not to say that all or any will be present, simply that they are typical in all or part. When you observe babies you will see that they laugh and cry a lot. Crying is more typical than laughing but this is true because we have not learned to make the birth process easier and less traumatic without drugs. Even if the mother is unconscious, the child still suffers and will frequently have drugs in their system as well. (It has been observed in the process that the odor of these drugs is in the breath of the client.) When we have learned to heal in the presence of first cause, rather than suppress, babies will laugh a lot more than cry. These symptoms of healing indicate energy is moving within the unconscious, and obstruction to balanced living is dissolving. The practitioner is encouraged to stay with the breath for it is the more powerful force here and the catalyst to the healing. Talking is antithetical to progress. Feeling cold -- this typically comes with fear when it surfaces in a fairly clean way. It can be associated with the death urge which we spoke of in the body of the statement above. Tetany: an experience that can be quite frightening but holds no real threat. It is the response of the ego to the attempt to release deeply embedded patterns which serve to keep us “in its control.” The experience becomes a part of our effort when the ego makes subtle changes in our breath pattern, and the balance of carbon dioxide to usable air becomes destabilized. We have been holding a bit to the exhale, or pushing it away from us, or we may be placing emphasis on the exhale rather than the inhale. Tetany will feel like a stiffness in the extremities or the areas around the mouth or the forehead, anywhere actually. The entire body may become "tetanized" and the client/patient will be frozen except for the ability to move the eyes about and to breathe. The experience fades if we either stop the breath process or achieve an efficient breath pattern. Tetany can be quite uncomfortable if we try to move against it or “make” it go away. It represents the ego's attempt to control the process and must be respected. You can assure yourself in that moment that you have confronted your control issues. A noble though joyless experience. I offer this respect by encouraging the client/practitioner to a more efficient and “toned down” version of the process. Suspended breath: we can hold our breath for about a minute and a half with no significant strain. Then we must take a breath or pass out from lack of oxygen. After we pass out, our bodies will begin to breathe automatically and we come back to consciousness soon thereafter. When one does the Breath of Life, there can occur in the process, a moment where one may have an unconscious suspension of breath. I have experienced it many times early in my study and I have seen it hundreds of times in my clients. It would seem as if a clip of our life has been taken out of the time line of perception. We are “gone.” As if we lost consciousness. Some report at the beginning or end of this moment, visions or sounds. I have dwelled in a dream state just on the edge of suspended breath. The sense of time and space is gone. The duration of the moment is held without breath at all. No breathing! I have seen this moment last for over five minutes. The client/practitioner is completely unaware of how much time has passed and will often be completely disbelieving of the duration. It will often seem as an instant. Frequently the client/practitioner returns with a jolting movement, like a snap to consciousness. Some have reported they experience this in their sleep as well. My experience tells me that in this moment, we are diving deep into the unconscious to do some adjustment or work at a level where we cannot go consciously. Possibly a prebirth event or choice that we are accessing. Many interesting things can be observed during a client’s suspension of breath. These observations are more prevalent to the intuitive rebirthing coach.

Death urge: The urge to quit, leave the process, heaviness on the chest, feelings of dying and fearful resistance to breathe. In more threatening circumstance this may manifest as angry denial, or blame of others, or hatred toward the coach. The manifestation of death urge in all of its forms is multitudinous and would take more time and space than we have here.

Peace: The rest that comes with surrender to the process. The body seems to be breathing itself and there is light in the view of the minds eye. All is well and the woes of the day are gone from view. Feelings of Loving kindness are felt towards all of the universe.

At the end of the thirty six minute period of breathing I will say, “Allow your breath to come to normal.” We share what may be shared, if anything, at that moment. A few minutes is spent in determining that you are completely in harmony with both hemispheres of your brain, and we bid each other ado until the next time.
